Nepal : Immersion
Charya Nritya Immersion with Prajwal Ratna Vajracharya | September 1-14, 2014 | Nepal
NEPAL SEPTEMBER 1-14, 2014
Tantric Buddhist Dance with Prajwal Ratna Vajracharya
‘Charya Nritya’ originated in the Kathmandu Valley, with the Newar People. It is a beautifully refined dance meditation in which we explore embodying the energies of nature, consciousness, and compassion as depicted in the deities of Himalayan Buddhism.
This Cultural Immersion is a unique opportunity to experience the Kathmandu Valley while studying with a lineage holder and master of this form.
Prajwal Ratna Vajracharya will offer daily meditation and guidance through the inner and outer techniques of Charya Nritya. He will share his knowledge as we visit some of the known and lesser known sacred places of Kathmandu and it’s surrounding areas. This region has an abundance of living traditions. With Prajwal, our group will be invited to witness and participate in rituals and festivities with his Vajracharya family.
Trishna Horvath will provide daily yoga practice to support your well being. Her classes are Hatha Flow with an emphasis on breath an awareness. She helps create the itinerary for this immersion from the perspective of an avid student.
In Kathmandu, we will stay at the Vajra Hotel, with it’s beautiful Pagoda Room, ours for study and practice. The hotel has a lot of character and a variety of rooms ranging from shared bath to private suite. It is located at the base of Swayambunath Stupa, and a five minute walk from Prajwal’s family home. From this base we will visit the statue making center of Patan, the active shrine of Vajrayogini at Pharping, and sites along its path, and many sacred sites important to Vajrayana Buddhism in the Kathmandu Valley.
The city of Bhaktapur is a UNESCO world heritage site, and our base for the middle of this immersion. There are very few cars allowed,… old buildings are preserved… It is like stepping back in time. Here we will have a chance to dedicate our attention to practice with leisure to explore this city’s traditional Newar architecture and artistry.
From here we will visit Boudinath Stupa, a pilgrimage place important to Tibetan’s, Nepalese, and others. It’s atmosphere is thick with the practices of circumambulation, prostration, and prayer. Before our return to Kathmandu we will take a quiet retreat day in the Hill Station town of Nagarkot. If we are lucky and the mists clear, we may see beautiful panoramic views of the Himalayan Range.
Our last few days in Kathmandu we will try to leave some open space for shopping.
We intentionally include in our schedule a guest teacher for Charya Songs and a Traditional Purification Ritual with Prajwal’s family, for our group. We plan to practice Charya Nritya in the spirit of offering at some of the sites that we visit. Though we create a rich schedule, we do ask that participants be willing to adjust here and there so that we can join in even more teachings, rituals, and festivities as we become aware of them. And with all that, we still intend to practice dance and yoga daily!
We consider this immersion a cultural exchange as well, and welcome the local community to participate in our class offerings. This was a delightful element of our 2012 trip!
